There are many binding processes that can be used for small or medium printing projects. The list includes plastic coil binding, plastic comb binding, wire binding and thermal binding. All of these methods of binding booklets are effective ways of creating booklets and all are routinely used today. Plastic coil binding (purchase plastic coil bindings.), however, is the most commonly used process.
The process starts when the plastic coil binding machine punches holes along one edge of the cover and pages. The holes are punched at a rate of four to five holes per inch, and some times more. The binding machine then lines up the holes, and PVC wire is spiraled through each punched hole. When this process is completed, all of the pages are bound together in booklet format. The plastic coil binding machines are either hand operated or run electrically. The plastic coil binding machines can effectively bind from ninety to approximately two hundred and fifty pages at a time.
PVC plastic is available in a wide assortment of colors and, as a result, the plastic not only holds the booklet together, it also accents the look of the booklet. Company or organization colors can be used in the binding. The plastic used is also very flexible, and bindings ranging in diameters from less than an inch to two inches can easily be made; however, this process is not effective if a binding greater than two inches is needed. The plastic used in plastic binding is also very strong, resulting in booklets that can endure abuse and last for a long period of time.
In addition to being durable, booklets made with the plastic coil binding process are very flexible. These booklets can be opened and made to lie flat for easy use or for making copies on a copier.
Booklets made with the plastic coil binding process are generally lighter than other bound booklets, and are also the right size and weight to mail or ship very cost effectively. This cost factor becomes an important consideration when mailing or shipping a large quantity of booklets.
